Weber State University functions as both an educational and cultural resource in Ogden. With an enrollment of approximately 21,700 students, Weber State offers a wide variety of programs in the arts, sciences, business, education and health. For the general community, the Department of Performing Arts maintains a year-round calendar of events at the university’s Browning Center. The Browning Center also hosts performances by the Utah Symphony and Ballet West. For sports fans, Weber competes in Division 1 football, men’s and women’s basketball, women’s volleyball and women’s soccer. Families also love a trip to the Ott Planetarium on campus, which features a variety of educational shows for astronomers of all ages.

History enthusiasts appreciate the Ogden Union Station and Fort Buenaventura State Park. The Union Station train depot was built in 1924 and saw many years of bustling activity before being converted into a museum and gallery hall. Now, the station displays a variety of artwork and artifacts particular to the region’s history. The Myra Powell Gallery displays the permanent art collection of original artwork by local and national artists. Other museums at the station include the Browning Arms Museum, the Browning/Kimball Auto Museum, the Utah State Railroad Museum, the Wattis/Dumke Railroad Museum and Union Station Natural History Museum.

At Fort Buenaventura State Park, one may walk through stockade and cabin replicas of the first Anglo settlement of the Great Basin. When the fort was established in 1846, it marked the close of the exploration era of the West. Now, the reconstructed fort stands as a reminder of this turning point in history. The 88-acre site along Weber River includes picnic and camping facilities and canoe rentals.

For children, the Treehouse Children’s Museum and Ogden Eccles Dinosaur Park are definitely worth visiting. The facility features interactive displays, stories, art and theater, geared specifically for the curious and developing mind. Child magazine named the museum one of the top fifty children’s museums in February, 2002. At Dinosaur Park, visitors may walk through six acres of recreated dinosaur habitats, including over 100 life-size dinosaur replicas. A state-of-the-art sound system recreates the sounds of the dinosaur era, complete with dinosaur footsteps and roaring. A museum, gift shop and café are also located onsite.
